At Junior College (JC) level, students can choose to read Mathematics at H1 or H2 levels. This causes some uncertainty for students, who may not be clear on what the difference is for JC Math at H1 and H2 level. For students who wish to make an informed choice of what level to take Math at, we have prepared a short comparison of the two.
What is the difference between H1 Math and H2 Math?
H1 and H2 Math differs in depth, content coverage, and difficulty level. Let’s take a look at the differences between H1 and H2 Mathematics, with their unique features and objectives.
Level of complexity
H1 Mathematics:
H1 Mathematics provides a foundational understanding of math principles. It covers topics like algebra, functions, basic calculus, and statistics. It focuses on helping students develop an understanding of fundamental concepts in Math. Being a H1 subject, it is relatively less complex compared to H2 Mathematics.
H2 Mathematics:
H2 Math delves into advanced Mathematical concepts, some that require more abstract thinking. It includes topics like further calculus, complex numbers, differential equations and vectors. H2 Mathematics is better suited to students who wish to take science related courses in University, as it prepares students for university studies in engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, data science, computing and economics.
Topics covered
H1 Mathematics:
Topics wise, H1 Math covers fewer topics compared to H2 Math. It focuses on core knowledge, going in-depth with key concepts. As a result, it does not cover more specialized areas that are covered in H2 Mathematics.
H2 Mathematics:
H2 Mathematics offers a broader range of topics. It goes beyond the H1 curriculum and includes topics and concepts such as further calculus, linear algebra, and complex numbers, double angle formula, differential equation and definite integrals. This comprehensive coverage gives students the ability to have a more in-depth understanding of math, and prepares students for university-level studies.
Examination Format
H1 Mathematics:
H1 Mathematics exam consist of only one paper, 40% of which is dedicated to pure Math topics and 60% on topics in Statistics. The questions tend to be short and the focus is on the application of Math principles to simple real-world problems.
H2 Mathematics:
H2 Mathematics exam consists of two papers. The first of which is entirely dedicated to pure Math, while the second has a 40% weightage on pure Math and a 60% weightage on Statistics. Both short and long questions will be asked, testing candidates’ analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. The questions often involve multi-step problems, and test students’ depth of understanding and application of advanced concepts to the solving of real-world problems.
H1 vs H2 Math Applications and Contexts
Here are the differences in H1 Math and H2 Math in terms of scope of content, as listed in the SEAB website:
Should I take Math at H1 or H2 Level?
If you are considering a University course that is related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or Economics, then taking H2 Math would help you greatly in preparing for that route.
The choice between H1 and H2 Mathematics depends on your career aspirations. It helps to check university requirements and to ask yourself about your personal affinity for math. Understanding the differences will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your future pursuits.
