Mr Tan develops engaging and executes purposeful lessons. He promotes a supportive classroom atmosphere and applies innovative teaching strategies to meet the needs of learners. For many years, he has received the Engaging Teacher Award from the school which he has helped to start and implement the instructional programme for General Paper as part of the Integrated Programme in the Senior High section.
Mr Tan has taught General Paper for 20 years. He was a curriculum planning officer at the Ministry of Education, where he worked with colleagues from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board and examiners from Cambridge Assessment International Education to develop examination syllabuses, design Specimen Papers and set examination papers. He has produced teaching and learning resources for schools and conducted workshops to prepare teachers to implement various upper and pre-university revised syllabuses.
In 2005, Mr Tan contributed a chapter in Teaching the General Paper: Strategies that Work, a teaching reference resource for General Papers teachers, compiled and edited by teacher trainers from the National Institute of Education (published in 2006).
In 2024, he published ‘A Primer on General Paper – A Self-Study Guide for Students Preparing for the GCE A-level Course’ to introduce A-level students to topical concepts and familiarise them with abstract ideas and a range of topics and complex issues that cut across disciplines.
Mr Tan believes that the teaching and learning of General Paper is not just to excel at the GCE A-level Examination. While the aim of the subject primarily is to enable learners to master critical thinking and effective communication skills demanded at the pre-university level, the spirit of the subject is to equip learners to understand the contemporary challenges and significant issues of the real world. The knowledge, skills and values acquired from learning the subject would prepare learners well beyond the examination demands to help them better navigate future challenges in their personal and professional lives.

My GP grades was always lacking in comparison to my other subjects and I initially had little interest in it. However, ever since I’ve joined the GP lessons, I have realised that the various topics are actually very thought provoking and eventually found myself vested in this subject. As a student of Learners’ Lodge, I really feel that I was not able to achieve my excellent result without the tutor’s guidance. Before I started his tuition, General Paper seemed to be an intimidating and daunting subject, and it was apparent with my consistent poor GP score. Fortunately, I had received my friend’s recommendation to join his Gp class, and thus I took a leap of faith.
