Dr Alson Chng obtained his PhD and B.Sc. (Hons) in Medicinal Organic Chemistry as well as a minor in Forensic Science from the National University of Singapore. He was a recipient of the NGS scholarship from the NUS Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering (now known as NUS ISEP) for his PhD studies at NUS. He has published journal research papers in medicinal organic chemistry and green chemistry as well as guided several undergraduate students for their final year projects.

Dr Chng is currently delivering theoretical and laboratory modules for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering students, both in Masters’ and Bachelors’ in universities in Singapore. In his professional capacity as an Assistant Faculty Head in Chemistry, he is involved in many processes of university education including student admissions, student advisor and mentor, outreach and recruitment and so on. He has also been actively involved in various roles in education to date, such as being a teaching assistant for theory and laboratory modules as well as a research mentor for students doing their undergraduate research/final year projects in Chemistry.

He has been teaching H2 Chemistry since 2011 and has helped students improve their understanding of Chemistry concepts and problems. With a belief that if one truly understands what he/she is doing every step of the way, be it solving problems, performing experiments, or even in day-to-day life, there will be no obstacles one cannot overcome! He guides students toward critical and analytical thinking about the objectives of learning and why it is important to understand concepts, what students are required to understand and deliver, as well as the hows to tackle the question from as many angles as possible before finally linking all the concepts together for a full understanding of. Once students possess critical and analytical thinking skills by questioning and recording every step of the way, students can look forward to going far in their academic and career endeavours!
