Mr. Chan Poh Sing
JC Chemistry Tutor, Learners’ Lodge
Mr Chan Poh Sing graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) with Second Class Honours (Lower Division). Upon graduation, he chose to join SIMTech Polymer Processing Group as a Research Associate. He had the privilege of working alongside world-class researchers in doing world-class research where critical and creative thinking skills are constantly applied. After a few years, he hoped to share this exciting experience with students and he joined MOE as a Chemistry Teacher in PJC from 2005 – 2007 and then in ACJC from 2008 – 2022.
Mr Chan was in charge of research programmes in ACJC from 2008 – 2010. He mentored students in doing their NUS Science Research Projects and NTU Nanyang Research Projects, in collaboration with university lecturers. He taught students oral presentation skills and provided critical judgement of their work in preparation for their research work presentation to the public.
Mr Chan was in charge of selecting and training a few students for the NTU Materials Science Challenge. It was an intensive and rigorous training programme conducted in a few months in addition to the normal school curriculum for these students. They persevered and won the Championship title and 1st Runner-Up title in 2008 and 2009 respectively. We were very proud of their achievement.
To excite students in Chemistry, Mr Chan designed a few experiments for the annual ACJC Science Week. Remembering his fond childhood experience of playing with sparklers, he designed an experiment where students were able to make their own sparklers in the lab from sucrose, potassium nitrate and magnesium. The students had so much fun that they requested for additional sessions of it. Mr Chan also had fond memories of glow sticks. He designed the Chemiluminescence experiment where students mixed diphenyl oxalate and hydrogen peroxide in a special dye that will emit coloured light on its own. They also had fun and laughter of being the glowing “stick man” dancing with music in a dark room.
Mr Chan believes that the Teacher should develop a student in a holistic way. The student will then grow up to a useful person to society. Mr Chan was an active member of the college’s National Education committee. He mentored his Form Class and a few other classes on their VIA projects that were conducted for young children and elderly people. Though the process was time consuming and full of changes, they were very delighted when they saw the joy and happiness in the beneficiaries. It was hard work that paid off. During COVID period, Mr Chan also designed the CCP lesson on Total Defence Day using Guardians of the City II (GOTC) game cards from MINDEF. The students loved it. Among other things, they learnt about the importance of psychological defence during the COVID period. ACJC received the NS MARK (Gold certification) from Ministry of Defence for its robust programmes. Mr Chan is honoured to be part of the team.
Mr Chan believes that every student can achieve good results in Chemistry if he is able to understand the concepts, connect the dots and apply it to solve multi-faceted problems in different contexts. The student needs to internalise the concepts with practice.

The JC Chemistry tutor in Learners’ Lodge made chemistry lessons really enjoyable with his witty and enthusiastic teaching style and it was through his lessons that I solidified my foundation and improved on my gaps of knowledge. He uses interesting examples and anecdotes which made it so much easier to understand the concepts. I’m grateful for his teachings, allowing me to secure an A for H2 Chemistry in the A levels.

There are two types of teachers, one who teaches their students what the syllabus dictates and the other, who go beyond the coursework to teach their students things that life dictates.
Thank you for being the latter. I have learned from your silence more than your talk since you are one of the few who talk less, and say more.

The tutor at Learners’ Lodge is incredibly dedicated and takes the time to explain Chemistry concepts to students patiently. He went out of his way to ensure I had extra notes and practices for my weaker topics, and was willing to schedule consultations when I needed them. I am very thankful to Learners’ Lodge for my A’s in A-Level Chemistry and would strongly encourage other A-level students to go for the lessons there too!
